An international team of scientists lead by European Spallation Source (ESS in Southern Sweden) Director for Science, Dimitri Argyriou, have discovered that in a class of materials known as Multiferroics, two poles behaves in a opposite way than what is expected; north and north poles attract each other while south and north poles repel.

This novel phenomenon may hold clues of how to form new magneto-electric devices for memory and sensor applications. Their results are reported in a the prestigious journal Nature Materials.
