The research performed at the laboratory covers disciplines such as physics, chemistry, biology, material science, geology, engineering and medicine. Every year the MAX-lab facilities are visited by more than 800 researchers.
The laboratory is the successor of the MAX-lab national laboratory and includes both the operation of the present MAX I, II, III facilities (MAX-lab) and the MAX IV project aiming at constructing the new MAX IV facility in the North Eastern part of Lund.
